4 Home Addition Types That Increase Home Square Footage

One of the reasons why homeowners invest in home additions is because it helps accommodate a growing family, thanks to the square footage that it can add to a house. Here are the different types of home additions that can increase your property’s square footage.

1. Kitchen Bump Out

A bump out increases the floor area by up to two feet on one side, which can be done without adding structural support posts. During construction, a section of the exterior wall will be removed, and flooring will be added before a new wall is built. Kitchen bump outs are ideal if you need a slightly expanded kitchen and don’t have the time or resources for a full kitchen remodel. A bigger kitchen can also help raise the value of your home.

2. Expand Your Garage

Consider expanding an existing garage from a one-car to a two- or even three-car garage, even if you now only own one family vehicle. The additional square footage within the garage can be allocated for a workshop or recreational area. A garage is also an opportunity to add living space above it, which can double as guest accommodations.

3. Attic Conversion

Attic conversion is one of the best ways to add square footage to your home without changing your home’s footprint. While attic spaces are typically converted into bedrooms, you can also have it converted into a home office, a recreation room or even a full-size bathroom, if there’s access to plumbing. Working with a new construction contractor or a remodeler who also installs roofing offers certain advantages. Since the attic is part of the roofing system, structural issues can be addressed prior to attic conversion. Dormer windows and skylights may also be installed to add natural lighting and ventilation.

4. In-Law Suite

In-law suites, also known as granny flats or accessory dwelling, is a type of home addition that is basically a smaller house within the same property. It is intended to provide living spaces to elderly family members who desire their own privacy. A typical in-law suite should have all basic amenities like plumbing and an HVAC system. Some in-law suites are attached to the main house and may share access to the kitchen and bathroom.
