Best Remodeling Projects for Growing Families

Some homeowners remodel to raise the house’s value, address structural issues or simply give their home a new look. If you’re expecting additional family members living with you in the near future, you should look into remodeling for your growing family.

Home Additions

A home addition is a living space that can be attached to the original structure or created as a smaller separate unit. While home additions are costlier than other home remodeling projects, they can be a good investment. For multi-family homes, a home addition provides more privacy compared to renovating an existing room, converting an attic or finishing the basement.

A popular type of home addition is an in-law suite, also known as a mother-in-law apartment, a granny flat or an accessory dwelling. An in-law suite is like a small apartment that has its own plumbing, electricity and HVAC system. In-law suites are typically occupied by elderly family members (hence the name) who wish to maintain some privacy.

Open Floor Plan

Open floor plans can help make your interiors look spacious without changing the house’s footprint. Taking out partition walls provide more flexibility with placement of dining and living areas. You can easily change these spaces as your family grows. An open floor plan will also let you benefit from more natural light and ventilation. Elderly family members, or those with accessibility limitations, can also move around the house with less obstructions.

Room Conversion

If you have young children, it’s only a matter of time before they’re asking for their own rooms instead of bunking together. There are many ways to add a room to your home: add a bump-out, move your home office to a different area or convert an attic or basement. All of these are viable for bedroom conversion, you just need to make sure you’re not skimping on the ventilation and insulation.
