Common Myths About Wind Damage on Roofs

Wind damage is one of the most common issues in roofing systems. However, there are a few misconceptions surrounding wind damage, and these could possibly affect how you expect your roof to perform or how to maintain it. Today, we debunk three myths about wind damage on roofs.

Wind Damage Is Impossible to Detect Early

While it’s true that signs of wind damage can be difficult to detect, doing so is not at all impossible. “Wrinkling” is usually an early warning sign that your shingles have been damaged by wind pressure, so look out for this type of damage when doing a visual inspection of your roof. But to ensure that you won’t miss any signs of wind damage on your roof, it’s still best to call your local roofer for a thorough inspection.

Wind Damage Results in Poor Shingle Adhesion

Yes, high winds can cause the adhesion of shingles to deteriorate, but remember that this isn’t always the case. In some instances, poor shingle adhesion can be due to shoddy roof installation. That’s why you should hire local roofing companies with trained and experienced workers. In other cases, shingles lose their adhesion because of constantly changing temperatures (which causes contraction and expansion) or hurricanes pulling away at the shingles.

Shingles Rated for Strong Winds Won’t Ever Get Damaged by Weaker Winds

Shingles are given a wind resistance rating after being tested during manufacturing. However, a high rating for wind resistance does not guarantee that your shingles will be able to withstand winds that are weaker than what is stated in its rating. This is because other factors – such as the roof’s slope, quality of installation and existing roofing issues – could affect the shingles’ ability to resist wind damage.
