FAQ: Roof Repair and Installation in Winter

Conventional wisdom says you should have your roof replaced during. However, there are certain conditions that can’t wait, such as emergency roof repairs. So, what do you do in this situation?

When Is It Too Cold to Install Asphalt Shingles?GAF, the leading provider of roofing products in North America, offers quality shingles. Their shingles are designed to withstand temperature extremes. However, they are best handled between 40 to 90 degrees. Installation in conditions below 40 degrees is still possible, but should only be done by installers who have received factory training from GAF. Certified contractors have undergone extensive training to ensure that they know how to properly install shingles. Asphalt shingles tend to lose its elasticity in cold environments, which can lead to cracked and fractured shingles if certain precautions are not taken.

How Do GAF Roofers Ensure Proper Installation During Winter?Roofers who have received factory training from GAF know how to take certain precautions during winter, whether working on new construction or roof repair.Prior to installation, asphalt shingles are installed in a heated area above 70 degrees when possible. This keeps the asphalt shingles pliable and easier to install.

Racking method is an installation method that requires lifting or bending the shingles when placing the last nail. While this is part and parcel of a standard roof installation procedure, it could damage new asphalt shingles if done in cold environments.GAF asphalt shingles feature Dura Grip™ reinforcing adhesive, which improves shingle wind resistance. It requires the heat of the sun to properly seal, but in cold environments, it needs to be hand-sealed by manually applying heat.

Will This Affect the Warranty Coverage? If the roof is installed or repaired by your GAF-certified contractor, the GAF Limited Warranty will remain in effect. This is why winter roof repair should never be left to just anyone, no matter how knowledgeable the person claims to be. A small mistake in installation can result in cracking, improper sealing or moisture infiltration, which may not be covered by warranty.Ritco Group is one of the few local roofing companies that hold a GAF designation in the area.
