Important Things to Consider When Choosing Your Roof Color

Color bears as much consideration as style and material when choosing your asphalt shingles. In this blog, local renovation roofing company Ritco Inc. shares insight on why color selection matters when planning a roof installation.

Color Coordination

Curb appeal can boost your home’s value. It also happens to be a mostly visual thing, which means the roof, siding, trim, and other exterior components need to be properly coordinated. Unless your roof replacement is part of a series of remodeling projects—meaning the siding and other components are to be replaced shortly—then you will need to make sure your roof works with every other part of the exterior. Roof color is particularly important when your home has permanent components on its exterior, like brick or stone.

Authenticity

Certain architectural styles just look wrong with different colors. For instance, a Craftsman-style home typically has warm and natural hues. This is why wood shingles and colors like olive green are typical of this home style; a solid black roof or bright blue siding would just look wrong.

If your roof color happens to have the color that matches its architectural style, then you’ll do better by keeping your new roof within the same color family. If it’s not, then your roof replacement project is an opportunity to give your home an authentic look. If you’re not entirely sure which color your roof should have, your local roof storm repair and installation company can help you pick the right colors.

Energy Efficiency

Color also has its practical uses. Light-colored roofs are actually more reflective, which means they absorb less heat from sunlight, compared to dark-colored ones. Choosing a light color can help lower your home’s indoor cooling requirements and save you on cooling costs during hot days.

While white roofs have the most reflective surface (outside of bare metal surfaces), they’re not exactly the most aesthetic. This is why only flat commercial roofs are available in white, as they’re not visible from the ground. Fortunately, roofing manufacturers like GAF offer asphalt shingles such as Timberline® CS, which has reflective properties that help reduce heat absorption through the roof. These products are available in several colors that lets you get a better match for your exterior.
