Planning a second story addition can be one of the most challenging new construction projects for any homeowner. There’s a lot of factors to consider, but there are some cases where it makes sense to do such an extreme renovation project. But if you’re serious about having this done on your own home, then here are some of the key items you need to consider.

The Budget of Your Second Story Project

If you have a tight budget, but still need to add several rooms, building up may be your best option. This is because you won’t have to spend for new foundations for your added space, lowering costs for your renovation project. You’ll be building on top of your home’s preexisting foundations, but before anything, have your hired contractor check whether the foundations of your home can accommodate the additional weight.

An Experienced Contractor Is Always Better

A second story addition is no easy project. We recommend you hire a professional contractor to get the job done right. Make sure that your selected contractors have the proper licenses and certifications in remodeling and construction. Instead of searching for several potential contractors and have them check your home each time, stick to at least two choices referred by friends or neighbors, and pick one that best suits you.

Some neighborhoods and local building codes may have height restrictions. Before you start building, check with the local city officials, and see if there are any restrictions you were not aware of earlier. It’s also important to consult with your hired contractor and check if your home has adequate structural support needed for your renovation project.
