A Guide to Making an Emergency Roofing Action Plan

Roofing emergencies do not have to be complicated as long as you’re prepared. It’s worth noting that the roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. It is one of the first exterior components to be damaged during a storm. Although new construction materials are more durable and stronger, you may require roofing repairs if an extreme weather event occurs.

Today, we discuss why having a roofing emergency action plan is important and what should be included in it.

Why Is a Roofing Emergency Action Plan Necessary?

Remember to address roofing emergencies immediately and definitively. Not having an emergency plan may cause delays in filing an insurance claim, causing roof repairs to be postponed. Furthermore, having no backup plans can add to the stress and frustration of dealing with damaged property.

What You Can Do

No standard emergency action plan exists for roofs because roofing systems in different locations vary. However, these steps should always be taken following a storm:

  • Examine your area. After the storm, inspect the roof for visible damage, especially the roof’s edges and flashing. Remember that you should only conduct a visual inspection and never climb your roof. You should also avoid downed power lines.
  • Schedule a roofing inspection. Your roofing contractor should be your first point of contact. A professional roofing inspection is required to document the extent of the roofing damage, which is then used to calculate the repair cost.
  • Contact your insurance provider. Your insurance company will send an adjuster to inspect your roof and prepare documentation for your claim. They will request your roofer’s damage report and roof repair estimate as part of the documentation. Once approved, your insurance company will work with your roofer to begin repairs.
