How to Live Comfortably On-Site During Renovations

In many ways, staying in your home while renovations are done is more convenient than moving out for the time being. It’s also cheaper and time-efficient since you won’t have to account for rental costs and traveling back and forth to check up on the progress of your contractor.

However, there are home improvement projects that will require you to move out due to safety, space or timeline concerns. Typically, these include major roof remodeling, asbestos removal and wood flooring refinishing.

But if you do stay, here are some tips on how you can ensure safety and comfortable living on-site.

Keep Displaced Items in Storage

Your contractor will likely ask you to clear out the area where they’ll be working. If you have a spare room or a garage, you can probably store the displaced items there. However, if you don’t have enough space, you might want to consider renting a storage  unit.

Seal Off Non-Construction Areas

Whether your contractor is working doing a roof repair or a kitchen remodel, you should keep the work zone and construction-free areas separate. Consider sealing off non-work areas, and have the work space cleaned at the end of each day. This way, dust and debris will stay out of your living areas and prevent your home from being covered in sawdust.

Turn Off Your HVAC Units

Construction work means having to deal with dust all day long. To prevent dust from flowing throughout your home, you can opt to turn off your HVAC unit. Another option is running an air handler to filter the dust out.
